Nandi County to set up a Sports Academy

Nandi County Government in collaboration with the Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS) intends to set up a state-of-the-art sports academy in the region to nurture talents among residents. 

The Academy’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Doreen Odhiambo said the academy will enable the county to produce professional sports men and women who would be able to join the local and international clubs to earn a living.

Speaking during a fact finding mission in the county after visiting a number of proposed sites including Eliud Kipchoge sports complex,, the CEO stated that the sports and talent academy is aimed at helping youths to explore their potentials for economic gain.

“The Academy will boost the region economically and help nurture sports talent,” she said. 

While receiving the team, Nandi County Chief Officer for Sports Beatrice Chemurgor thanked KAS for the partnership with the county government saying area government is keen on promoting sports and nurturing talents.

“The county government is taking sports very seriously and we intend to open an academy that will develop all types of sports such as volleyball, basketball, karate, tae kwondo, boxing and other indoor sports like badminton and table tennis,” she said. 

The news comes as a boost after Sports Kenya on Wednesday advertised the tender for the construction of ‘Eliud Kipchoge Stadium’ in Kapsabet town with the interested bidders expected to return their documents on October 26.

Nandi Governor Stephen Sang said the county government had set aside the required land and processed expeditiously the necessary documents and approvals for the projects.

“Nandi, famed as the cradle of champions is happy to host the facility. We thank the national government and all stakeholders for their tireless dedication to this endeavour,” he said
