Kisumu governor Anyang' Nyong'o has applauded a team of medics who conducted a successful caeserian operation at the Pap Onditi county hospital.

The operation, the first in Nyakach Sub County was conducted on Thursday, with Governor Nyong'o stating that the mother and child are safe.

"Yesterday, in the afternoon, a team of medics conducted a successful caeserian operation, the first one in the entire Nyakach Sub-County since Independence. The mother and child are doing well after the historic operation," Nyong'o said.

He spoke on Friday, during the official opening of mother and child unit, and launch of an X-ray machine at the hospital.

The operation, Nyong'o said was conducted by a team of nine medics, led by Dr Paul Ogolla and Dr Michael Odera.

The successful operation, the county boss added, is proof that Sub-County hospitals are now well prepared to undertake major medical procedures.

"We will continue to staff and equip all our Sub-County hospitals to enable help our people. I am excited that our vision of having one comprehensive county hospital in each sub county is being realized. We are also progressively ensuring that each of the 35 Wards has a comprehensive health and wellness center," added Nyong'o.

The commission of the facility comes 4 months after a similar event was undertaken at Ratta in Seme, through partnership with Mpesa foundation.

The facility in Nyakach, was built through a joint financial support of the Kenya Devolution Support Program (KDSP), which committed Sh82 million while the County Government of Kisumu gave out Sh18 million.

Nyong'o said his administration has taken a deliberate effort to improve the health outcomes of mothers and children.

"We have recorded significant progress in maternal and child health indicators over time, and yet, we continue to face the stark reality that many women, children, and adolescents still suffer from preventable conditions."

"It is a reminder that we must sustain our efforts to bridge gaps in access to quality Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) services, addressing inequities that persist among different population groups for various reasons," he added.

The launch was attended by among others, Principal Secretary, State Department for devolution Teresia Mbaika, and Mathew Owili, Kisumu County Deputy Governor among others.
