Senate officials on Tuesday visited Turkana County to assess the County’s preparedness for the senate sitting scheduled for September 25 to 29, 2023.
The team was led by Zakayo Mogere, the Deputy Director of Legislative and Constitutional Services.
The visit was meant to assess the preparedness of the Turkana County Government for hosting the Senate sitting scheduled for late September.
“The decision to hold Senate sittings in different counties across Kenya began in 2018, starting with Uasin Gishu, Kitui in 2019, and now Turkana County," Mogere said.
The practice is in accordance with Article 126 of the Kenyan Constitution, which states that the Senate may sit anywhere in Kenya.
After visiting nine counties, including Turkana, the teams filed their reports, prompting the Senate to hold its sitting in Turkana.
Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus welcomed the Senate committee and expressing pride in hosting the Senate sitting in Turkana.
He said,”this opportunity allows us to showcase the infrastructural development projects we have undertaken in Turkana County.”
Dr. Erus highlighted the importance of supporting the County Government and County Assembly.
He assured the Senate Committee that the County Government would provide the necessary resources to make the Senate sitting a success.
He expressed his intention to showcase impactful projects such as the water desalination plants and the Huduma Biashara Centre.
In attendance were Deputy County Secretary Joseph Nyang'a, Chief Officer of the Office of the Governor Paul Lodung'a, officials from the County Assembly, and the Senate officials.
