Police have arrested a fourth suspect linked to the brutal killing last month of a 20-year-old form four leaver in Eldoret.
The suspect, Benjamin Njenga was smoked out of his hideout in Nairobi where he fled after allegedly attacking and killing the student, Ahmed Mohammed Ismael.
“Our investigations led us to the arrest of the suspect who is linked to the murder of the former high school student from his Nairobi hideout,” said a CID senior officer who sought anonymity.
The suspect, a matatu driver allegedly committed the offense jointly with three others on June 2, this year at West Indies in Turbo sub-county, Uasin Gishu County.
He was arraigned in an Eldoret court Tuesday but did not take a plea after the police successfully applied to detain him for seven days to enable them to conclude investigations.
The suspect, who is being held in custody at Eldoret central police station, will be taken back to court on August 15 for the mention of his case.
His three co-accused persons, among them a woman, pleaded not guilty to the killing of the deceased by hitting him with a blunt object.
The accused, Juliet Ayieta, Paul Osinde and Gregory Mukhori appeared before Eldoret High Court Judge Reuben Nyakundi.
Their plea-taking came after they were declared mentally fit to stand trial following an assessment conducted at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. They are represented by lawyer Elijah Ayiego while the prosecution is led by Mark Mugun.
The Judge ordered the prosecution to serve the accused persons with the relevant documents within a period of 14 days pending the mention of their case set for October 2nd.
The suspects who are being held at Eldoret GK remand prison reportedly subjected the deceased to mob justice on the fateful day in connection with the theft of a mobile phone belonging to a college student.
The deceased was attacked with blunt objects and stones by a mob led by the four suspects after the college student raised an alarm to the effect that the slain youth had stolen her phone.
According to the police report, the irate mob pursued and caught up with the deceased where they allegedly stoned him to death at the gate of the hostel where the victim was staying.
