Stakeholders from the Ministry of Education in Kisii have asked the county government to relocate the hazardous dumpsite located next to Kari D.E.B Primary School in Kisii Central Sub County.

The plea comes in the wake of a distressing incident in which bees attacked some pupils near the school grounds on Wednesday, leaving 49 learners in pain.

Speaking to the press, the Sub-County’s Director of Education, Mr. Cyrus Juma expressed concern over the dumpsite's proximity to the school, highlighting the potential danger it poses to the pupils' well-being.

Juma lauded the teachers and medical staff for responding swiftly during the incident and advised the school administration to take up the matter with the county government to immediately facilitate the relocation of the dumpsite.

Acting Hospital Administrator at Oresi Sub County Hospital, Dr Christabel Otieno reported that among the affected students, 14 suffered severe anaphylactic reactions, necessitating immediate medical attention.

“The remaining 35 students have stabilized and were discharged from the facility, while the rest are expected to be discharged soon,” she said.

Kari D.E.B Primary School head teacher, Mr. Abel Maseno recounted the incident saying that during the lunchtime break, some students left the school to search for loquats near the dumpsite.

Inadvertently, they disturbed a swarm of bees leading to the unfortunate attack on younger students after the bees pursued them back to the school.

A concerned parent Mr. Nathan Nyamweya expressed his anxiety and fears regarding the potential dangers posed by the dumping ground with regard to the safety of the children.

Along with other parents, they asked the county government to take swift action and move the dumpsite to ensure the safety and well-being of the students.

This unfortunate occurrence comes after other incidents of stray dogs attacking children in the vicinity were reported last year, further emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures in the area surrounding the school.
