Spain were denied the women's Olympics bronze medal as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Germany at the third tier match played on Friday, 9 August, 2024.
Giulia Gwinn converted a second Half penalty following a collision by Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll a inside the area.
Lea Schuller came close to doubling the lead towards the end of the game, but Coll atoned with a magnificent save to maintain a one-goal deficit.
Up against it, the Spaniards threw everything at the opposing goal, only to be met by a wall in the form of German keeper Ann-Katrin Berger, who has been her side's saviour on more than one occasion in this tournament.
The 33-year-old denied Alexia Putellas from the spot with seconds left on the clock to ensure Germany's win.
The result meant that reigning world champions Spain failed to make the podium on their Games debut.
Spain were eliminated on the Semi Finals by a 4-2 defeat to Brazil while Germany suffered a 1-0 defeat to USA on their semi Final exit.
The Olympics women's football final between USA and Brazil will be played on Saturday.
