Netherlands's Sifan Hassan wins gold in women's marathon.

Dutch sprinter Sifan Hassan has won the women's Marathon Gold at the Paris Olympics completing a record of three medals in three different events.

Sifan claimed the gold in absolute style marking a stunning Olympic marathon record of 2:22:55.

She has also made history in Paris by becoming the first ever female athlete to win medals in three different races with a bronze in the 5000m,bronze in the 10,000m and gold in marathon.

Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa won silver clocking 2:22:58 while Kenya's Hellen Obiri finished third for Bronze at 2:23:10.

Five athletes battled it out for the marathon medals including Amane Beriso Shankule of Ethiopia and Sharon Lokedi of Kenya.

Defending champion Peres Jepchirchir dropped out of the race after sustaining a fitness problem.

Sifan Hassan was in contention for a medal with 4 kilometres remaining to the finishing line and created a promising pace while Hellen Obiri slowed down when picking a water bottle but she managed to rejoin the leading group.

The 16-day Paris Olympics will officially culminate today during a closing ceremony at Stade De France.

Kenya is currently leading the African medal standings with 11 medals, 4 gold Medals,2 silver and 5 bronze while it stands at 17 globally.
