Residents of Sosiot trading centre in Belgut sub-county within Kericho are still reeling in shock following the shooting of a 29-year- old woman by a police officer who later turned the gun on himself.

Confirming the incident which occurred Wednesday morning, Belgut sub-county police commander, Charles Kibathi said the Administration police officer attached to Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit shot his alleged lover, a tailor, for unknown reasons.

“The deceased identified as Berenardo Bilayi aged 40 years left his place of work where he was attached to Ekatera Tea Estate and went to Sosiot shopping center while armed with a loaded G3 rifle. He proceeded to Blessing Tailoring shop where he found Shauline Akoth his alleged lover working on the sewing machine and shot her three times,” said Kibathi.

The police officer shot the victim dead on the neck, collarbone and on the chest, clarified the Belgut sub-county police boss.

“After completing his mission, he walked to his house a few metres away and fatally shot himself with the bullet entered through the chin exiting through the forehead,” added Kibathi.

The police boss appealed to police officers to seek to resolve their issues amicably whenever they had disagreements.

He noted that the officer was hardworking and had not displayed any forms of depression and that the woman had been at her tailoring business for only three months.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Kericho County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation awaiting postmortem examination.
