Residents of the Maraba-Kabolebo location in Tinderet Sub-County have unanimously agreed to significantly reduce the number of licensed liquor outlets in the area.
Paul Keriako, Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Tinderet Sub-County, said that this will aid in safeguarding precious lives and make the citizens more productive in society.
“I am glad that we shall reduce the outlets in Maraba from the current four bars and one wine and spirits to two bars and one wine and spirits,’’ Keriako announced during a public participation on the management of liquor outlets.
He pointed out that alcohol abuse can lead to violence and conflicts in one’s relationships. The move, he observed, will protect the youth and they will keenly regulate the licensing of outlets.
Public Health Officers cautioned members of the public against the excessive and unpleasant effects of drinking alcohol.
“Binge drinking leads to a deteriorating physical condition that can include liver damage and increases the risk of heart disease. An expectant woman may give birth to a baby with defects that affect the baby’s heart, brain, and other major organs,’’ they advised.
The health experts added that alcohol-withdrawal symptoms like jumpiness, sleeplessness, sweating, poor appetite convulsions, and sometimes death may set in.
The gathering which also included Officers Commanding Stations (OCS) and Chiefs, broadly discussed theft of motorcycles, defilement cases, forest protection and management, and stock theft.
Residents registered their concern about the rise in the number of eight stolen bikes in the last four months.
“We suspect that some of the few thieves in the area are collaborating with the employees of a certain motorbike-selling company. These ill-intended motives are specifically targeting those who are nearing the completion of their loan obligations,’’ decried members of the public.
The security officers reassured the affected persons that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and culprits brought to book.
More significantly, the Maraba residents were also advised to be extra vigilant with their children during this festive season as there is an upsurge in reported defilement cases.
To safeguard our ecosystems, the public was urged to protect their forests and plant more trees to control the effects of climate change and for sustainable development.
The public alerted the security organs that the stock theft cases are on an upward trajectory following a one-year lull in areas bordering Soba and Kapkitony locations.
“As residents of these areas we have agreed to join hands with the Government to arrest the situation and bring an amicable solution,’’ they declared.
