The government is targeting to register 8396 orphans and vulnerable children in Homa Bay County to benefit from a social protection cash transfer program.

Rangwe Deputy County Commissioner Alphet Jilo said another 853 persons with severe disabilities were also expected to be registered in the month-long exercise.

Speaking Friday during the launch of the exercise in Homa Bay town, the administrator warned criminals against conning potential beneficiaries of the social protection program.

Jilo said criminals may take advantage of gullible members of the public to steal from them.

Beneficiaries are elders above 70 years, orphaned and vulnerable children as well as people with severe disability.

Ms Jilo said criminals may masquerade as registration officials demanding bribes from unsuspecting members of the public.

"They may disguise as government officials and ask you to pay them before being listed as a beneficiary. Let everyone know that no one is charged to be listed," she said.

Ms Jilo also told beneficiaries to be wary of criminals who intend to collect their details and use them for other criminal activities.

She said the exercise is being done digitally and by government officials.

"Chiefs will be responsible for ensuring the exercise runs smoothly. security officers will also be stationed at the registration desks to ensure safety and security," the administrator said.

Homa Bay County Social Services Coordinator Fredrick Makini said registration will be done in all locations across the county.

Officials will be stationed at designated areas on specific days to make the servers easily accessible to everyone.

He said registration will also be done at the county office for people who will not get a chance to go to the registration centers.

The official appealed to residents to provide them with information about deceased persons so that their data could be erased from the system.
