Residents of Homa Bay town have asked the government to tame a spike in cases of insecurity in the town and its environs.

The residents led by Arujo Ward Member of County Assembly Mr. Tony Otieno asked the police to increase vigilance and apprehend suspects.

Otieno said the area had witnessed multiple cases of crime over the past two weeks with fears that more cases of crime are likely to be reported if no action is taken.

He said all incidents of crime should also be thoroughly investigated and necessary action taken to apprehend the culprits. "Courts should ensure criminals are sent to jail," he said.

Homa Bay Sub-County Police Commander Peter Maluki said they were investigating all the cases.

The incidents include the killing of an Information Communications Technology Authority (ICTA) staffer identified as David Mutai Kiprop last Wednesday under unclear circumstances.

The officer is suspected to have been killed elsewhere before his body was dumped in Lake Victoria at Koginga Beach. Maluki said investigations into the incident are ongoing.

"The Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers are handling the matter. They have summoned a number of people who have recorded statements," he said.

Two families were also attacked last week at Ngere and Lala village where the gang defiled two teenagers.

Maluki dismissed the existence of a criminal gang, saying preliminary investigations have revealed that the culprits were people out to settle scores with the victims. He however assured residents that the police will do their best to contain the criminals.

Maluki asked members of the public to cooperate with them in smoking out offenders.

"Police should be friends with civilians. Let us work together in smoking out criminals," he said
