Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Wednesday morning led a group of government officials in seeing off President Wiliam Ruto, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Ruto travelled to Juba, South Sudan for a crucial visit aimed at strengthening peace and economic ties.
“Seeing off President William Samoei Ruto as he departed for Juba, South Sudan this morning for an official visit aimed at consolidating the South Sudanese political transition through the Tumaini Peace Consensus,” Kindiki shared online.
The Tumaini Peace Initiative is supported by Kenya and other development partners.
“It is progressive model for inclusive peace-building to achieve lasting peace and tranquillity in the region,” added the Deputy President.
The initiative was launched in May, 2024, after being proposed by Salva Kiir, South Sudan President.
State House Spokesman Hussein Mohamed in a communication said Ruto and Kiir’s discussions will also address strategic regional infrastructure projects.
The projects include LAPSSET Corridor Development. The LAPSSET Corridor Development Authority (LCDA) was established in 2013 through the Presidential Order Kenya Gazette Supplement No. 51, Legal Notice No. 58.
LCDA's role include plan, coordinate and manage the implementation of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor.
It is domiciled in the Presidency in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
“This transformative project aims to boost trade by providing seamless connectivity between South Sudan and the Indian Ocean. Completion of essential road links between the two countries is expected to improve connectivity, reduce costs, and stimulate local economies, aligning with the vision of a prosperous and interconnected East Africa,” said Mohamed.
The two leaders will also discuss issues revolving around the African Union.
Kenya has fronted Azimio leader Raila Odinga as its candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairman seat.
Elections for the next AUC chair will be conducted in February, 2025.
