Nyandarua Senator John Methu has asked Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to consider forming an alliance with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and other influential leaders in the opposition.
According to Methu, Gachagua’s alliance with leaders from the opposition will help solidify his position and shape his future political position in the country.
The Senator urged Gachagua to loosen his 'traps' against working with the opposition and emulate President William Ruto's approach on a broad based government.
“I want to plead with you to remove the ‘traps’ we had placed against the opposition since they could probably capture our friends and use this opportunity to your advantage to make new allies ,” Senator Methu said.
In February 2024, Gachagua has declared that he had set traps at State House to ensnare specific individuals, mainly the opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Gachagua declared that he will be keen to prevent Raila Odinga from seeking a share of Kenya Kwanza's government.
“Leave the job of guarding the President to me. If anyone tries to approach State House, I have set traps on every possible path they could take. There is no way they can get through. So, there’s nothing for you to worry about,” Gachagua said.
Methu advised that forming political alliances will consolidate Gachagua’s support from across the country.
“I advise you to use this opportunity to build new relationships by collaborating with smaller parties, including those led by Kalonzo Musyoka and George Natembeya, as well as individuals with a few MPs, regardless of their political strength." he added.
However, Methu advised Gachagua not to consider Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua, asserting that she has political influence in the country as she lacks an MCA, MP or any national elected leader at her party.
Methu’s proposal is based by the recent decision by President William Ruto to join hands with opposing leader Raila Odinga in forming a broad - based government which saw four members of the ODM party appointed into the newly structured Cabinet.
This decision has sparked discontent within the opposition coalition, leading to Nark-Kenya's and DAP-K's withdrawal from the Azimio Coalition.
Odinga's face in the government has also not been received well by Mount Kenya legislators allied to the Deputy President, who have since seen the move as an attempt to sideline Gachagua and a threat to the region's position in the Kenya Kwanza Administration.
President Ruto has however defended his decision, arguing that these appointments will steer Kenya’s development.
The president further urged leaders to put aside personal interests and focus on uniting the country.
