Gigiri Officers Released on Bond
By Robert Mutasi
Five officers from the Gigiri Police Station have been freed with one surety and a personal bond of Ksh 200,000 apiece.
Each of the accused individuals requires the surety to sign a personal bond totalling Ksh 100,000.
The decision was made by Principal Magistrate Martha Nazushi, who found that the police's justification for their detention was insufficient.
"I decline the application and proceed to release the respondents on bond of Sh 200,000," ruled Nazushi.
Gachoka had earlier pleaded for the officers to be held at Runda, Parkland, and Spring Valley while the investigation was being conducted.
The court further ordered the suspects to report to the investigating officer twice a week for the period requested by the DCI.
Officers Ronald Babo, Evans Kipkirui, Zachary Nyabuto, Mollent Achieng and Gerald Mutuku were detained on suspicion of involvement in the escape of 13 prisoners from the cells of the Gigiri police station.
Now it has been revealed that the prisoners were released using the door of the facility.
Contrary to what was thought that the suspects cut the wire surrounding the cell and climbed on the roof of the station, the suspects opened the cell and left.
The police are still looking for the prisoners including the suspect in the murder of Kware Collins Khalusha and 12 Eritrean citizens.
The investigating officer, Benedict Kaulu, informed the court that statements from more than five witnesses have not yet been recorded.
"The officers have indicated their willingness to lead to their arrest which will be defeated should they be released at the moment," said Kaulu.
The 33-year-old Collins Khalusha was being held at a police station.
Following the discovery of dead bodies, he admitted to killing 42 women, including his wife.
The detectives requested the suspect to be held for 7 days to allow the investigation team to complete the task.
