Stop burdening Kenyans with high taxes, Orengo tells government
Siaya, Saturday, 6, May, 2023
KNA by Philip Onyango.
Siaya governor, James Orengo is calling on the government to stop burdening Kenyans with high taxes as the country grapples with high cost of living.
Orengo says that the government risked facing a revolt by the citizens if the trend is not reversed.
He was speaking at Ukwala boys’ high school in Ugenya Sub County during a meeting with community health volunteers from the area.
“If you keep on overburdening Kenyans, it will force the citizens to rise up,” he said adding that plans to raise taxes as contained in the finance bill must be revised.
Orengo said that the Kenya kwanza government will have to reduce its appetite for spending and look for alternative ways of running its activities without exerting pressure on the already overburdened tax payers.
“Former president Uhuru Kenyatta and even the regime of Mwai Kibaki and former premier, Raila Odinga cushioned Kenyans through subsidies” said Orengo, adding “but the Kenya Kwanza government removed the subsidies hence exposing citizens to high cost of living”.
The governor said that Kenyans will have to agree with Azimio la Umoja’s calls for reduction of the high cost of living by the government.
“Azimio has always maintained that the price of Unga is high and the government has always dragged its feet to bring the cost down” said Orengo adding that going to the streets has proved to be one of the best options to force the government to act.
Orengo later visited families displaced by floods in Sifuyo, West Ugenya and distributed relief supplies.
