Suspect in Radio Presenter Lilian Achieng’s murder arrested

The prime suspect in the murder of Radio Presenter Lilian Achieng has been arrested.

George Mwenda Mutegi was apprehended on Friday, after days of police manhunt. Mutegi was reportedly smoked out of his hideout at Kaanwa area of Tharaka Nithi county.

He was arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers from the Nairobi headquarters, alongside their Meru counterparts.

Mutegi is believed to have murdered his girlfriend on the night of November 01, 2024, before ‘vanishing into thin air.’

Police and the neighbours woke up to a slain Achieng. Her lifeless body lay soaked in blood with a stab wound at the back of her right ear, with visible injuries on her face and hips.

“Probing the case, police found out that the two lovebirds had on the fateful night had a good time at a local establishment, before retreating to the boyfriend's place aboard in Kahawa West,” stated the DCI.

“In an ugly turn of events, the attention of the neighbours was drawn to loud screams from Mutegi's locked house, which were quickly deafened by loud noise from his sound system. Unaware that the distress call was the last Achieng would ever make, the neighbours went back to their houses hoping that the duo would resolve their issues.”

That night, as neighbours who would have assisted Achieng retreated to their houses, the life of a 33-year-old lady with a blossoming career as a presenter at a local radio station was ended.

The suspect is currently being held by police, awaiting arraignment in court next week.

Lilian's mother said the 33-year-old had informed her family on Thursday last week that she would be spending the night at her boyfriend’s place, which turned out to be the last time she heard from her. 

She was described by her friends as bubbly and full of life. “We have lost a very good girl in the hands of a person probably she really loved,” a friend stated.
