Teachers have been asked to be role models to the young learners so as to raise morally upright and responsible citizens.

Speaking during the closure of a three days’ workshop for the newly recruited Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers at Kilgoris Boys’ High School, Narok County Commissioner Isaac Masinde said teachers are key people who define the future generation.

He observed that teachers receive children from different backgrounds who look upon them as role models, saying immoral teachers end up raising indisciplined students.

Mr Masinde asked teachers to help end retrogressive cultural practices that affect education noting that Gender Based Violence (GBV) issues are common in the county and teachers had a major role to play to enlighten the society on how to live upright life.

“Cases of early pregnancies and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are rampant in this area. I ask teachers not to relent to educate the society on the negative effects the retrogressive culture brings,” he said.

On drug abuse, the commissioner asked the teachers to avoid taking alcohol when going to teach as their learners will easily embrace the bad habit.

Narok County Director of Education Apuko Apollo, who accompanied the Commissioner said discipline is key in every profession hence asked teachers to conduct themselves in a manner that will impact positively on their learners.

“There is no need of having professors, doctors, engineers among others, who are not morally upright. We want a disciplined generation that will spur the growth of the county’s economy,” he said.

Narok Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Director Jane Mutua asked the teachers to take the skills they had learnt in the three days’ workshop to the staffroom so as all the teachers can be enlightened.

She called on teachers to embrace technology so as to compete with the modern world.

About 132 newly recruited teachers in the larger Trans Mara region were trained at Kilgoris Boys high school while another 148 from the Narok South, North, West and East areas were trained at St Mary’s Girls’ high school.
