Kenya National Union of Teacher Mt Elgon branch has today come out to oppose the proposed 3percent house taxation levy in the Finance Bill, 2023.
Led by the branch treasurer Evans Masai while addressing the press at Kapsokwony Boys High School, the teachers said that the country is currently undergoing hard economic times and the house levy should wait.
Maasai noted that now that the government has done away with delocalization, most teachers operate from their homes hence they do not urgently need houses.
The KNUT treasurer further advised that if the housing levy was an urgent issue, then the government could use the National Community Development Fund (NCDF) to do the project.
He urged President William Ruto to put more emphasis on stabilizing the economy noting that people cannot live in a good house on an empty stomach, citing the elderly who have gone for several months without their monthly stipend.
He further revealed that most of teachers have already engaged their pay slips by taking loans to buy or put-up houses in their respective homes.
"The pay slip is already with outstanding loans hence it will be double payment to own a house," he said.
He cautioned the Head of State that if the bill passes with the 3percent housing levy, then the civil servants led by teachers will be demoralized.
He called upon Members of Parliament to listen to wananchi who voted for them during the August 2022 General Election and shoot down the proposed bill.
