Teen fined Sh50, 000 for stealing five windows and a gas cylinder

A 19-year-old man was on Monday fined Sh50,000 with the option of serving a four-month jail term for the theft of five windows valued at Sh22,000 and a 13-kilogram gas cylinder worth Sh8,000. 

The court heard that Peter Wambua committed the offense on September 26, 2022, and was apprehended and taken to Ithanga Police Post.

The complainant, one Wilson Wambua, stated that in July 2022, a gas cylinder in his brother's house exploded, causing a fire that resulted in the destruction of all the equipment inside and tragically led to his brother's death.

Following the burial of his brother, Wambua collected the burnt equipment, including the windows, gas cylinder, and doors, and stored them safely.

However, a few days later, Wambua noticed that the windows and gas cylinder were missing and promptly reported the theft to the Ithanga Police Post. 

In June 2023, there were reports of the accused, Peter Wambua, having been seen with the stolen equipment and when questioned about the items, he confessed to stealing them. As evidence, two photographs of the equipment were presented in court.

During the trial, Wambua explained that he had sold the stolen equipment to his friend Zui for Sh600.

In his defense, he further claimed that he had no family, lived alone and begged for clemency.

Senior Magistrate Sheila M. Nyaga reviewed the photographic evidence of the stolen equipment, found Wambua guilty and gave him 14 days to appeal the verdict.
