This is not Meru, MCAs assure governor Sakaja over impeachment claims

Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja has been told to continue discharging his mandate without an iota of worry, even as reports surfaced that some Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) were planning for his impeachment.

Reports indicate that the impeachment motion is allegedly being pushed by Kileleshwa MCA, Robert Alai.

However, several MCAs led by Umoja’s Mugambi Mark Ronaldo Macharia have dismissed the planned impeachment, urging Sakaja to continue marching forward.

“If anything, before we consider impeachment, those in the executive who are underperforming should go home first,” said Macharia. “This is not Meru County; we will not impeach our Governor,” added Korogocho MCA Absalom Odhiambo.

Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza has been impeached thrice by MCAs since assuming office in 2022. She was saved by the Senate twice, before being sent packing. She has challenged the latest impeachment at the High Court.

The MCA were in the company of governor Sakaja during the opening of a “Dishi na County” kitchen in Umoja, Embakasi West constituency.

Governor Sakaja termed the impeachment rumours as baseless distractions, adding that his administration remains focused on delivering its promises to the people of Nairobi.

“We have delivered 17 kitchens across 17 sub-counties. We will not be distracted by naysayers. Our focus is on delivering what we promised. We have a mandate, and we don’t have time for rumours. Our priority is to work for our people, not to engage in gossip.”

He denied claims that he was supposed to accompany President William Ruto on his trip to China, before being ‘dropped from the plane.’

“Which plane are people talking about? I was supposed to be in Umoja today, not in China. Those are just rumours,” said the first term county boss.

In his reaction over President Ruto’s new found working relationship with Azimio leader Raila Odinga, Sakaja said that is what he had been calling for, for a very long time.

“Many were sceptical about my decision to work with the opposition, but now it’s clear that we have a national government of inclusivity that will deliver. We fully support that.”
