Trans Nzoia County government has rolled out the distribution of bursary cheques worth Sh60 million to various schools in the region in an effort aimed at bolstering education for underprivileged students.

The initiative, which falls under the Elimu Bursary Fund, aims to lift the financial burden for needy students.

Speaking to the press Thursday, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education and Vocational Training Mr. Sam Ojwang said a team of county officials, including CECMs, Chief Officers and Directors was coordinating the disbursement of the bursary cheques.

Ojwang disclosed the cheques would be distributed to a total of 262 secondary schools within the 25 wards.

"We are under instruction by Governor George Natemebeya to ensure the swift disbursement of the bursary cheques before the official commencement of national examinations," stated Ojwang.

Kenya News Agency has established that the selection of successful beneficiaries was a week-long vetting exercise that engaged the Education Department, county officials, and Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).

“To promote transparency, accountability, and accessibility of public information, the lists of all beneficiaries will be publicly displayed on notice boards at the offices of local chiefs and ward administrators in each of the 25 wards,” said CEC Ojwang.

He stressed Governor Natembeya's commitment to supporting needy students, particularly those attending day schools, who often encounter hurdles in pursuing their academic aspirations.

"The Governor has a great passion for the education of needy students thus the Elimu Bursary Fund,” the CEC added.

He further disclosed that the bursary fund would be expanded to provide assistance to underprivileged students in tertiary institutions.
