Residents of Trans Nzoia County have been assured of maximum safety from any adverse effects, which might be caused by El-Nino rains that according to the weatherman will be experienced in several parts of the country toward end of October and November.

This was disclosed by Area Governor George Natembeya in a press briefing at his Kitale Town Hall Office Monday evening.

"My administration in collaboration with the National government has initiated a raft of preventive measures aimed at ensuring communities living in lowland areas are safe from the impending threats of El Niño,” stated Natembeya.

The governor said that the county had already activated its County Disaster Committee and set up a Command Centre with a toll free number 800724994.

The command centre, which is domiciled at the County Commissioner's office, will work round the clock and on high alert in readiness to respond to emergencies that might arise during the predicted El-Nino rains period.

"We have mapped out several flood hotspot areas, including Namanjalala, Kapsitwet and Saboti based on situational analysis from the data on floods and mudslides as experienced in the past,” he disclosed.

According to the County administrator, the data formed the basis for the disaster committee’s action plan whose main objective was to mitigate any disasters in the mapped areas.

He further revealed the devolved unit had established a Disaster Emergency Fund kitty and used the occasion to call out on well-wishers to contribute towards the same.

Natembeya appealed to the locals to work closely with all government and private entities to ensure Trans County was safe from any forms of catastrophe that accompany heavy rains, floods and thunderstorms.

“In times of disaster, members of the public must cooperate with governments for the sake of prevention of loss of human and animal lives and properties,” urged Natembeya.
