Two arraigned in Maralal court for illegal possession of ivory

Two men were today arraigned before a Maralal court charged with illegal possession of elephant tusks worth Sh7.7 million.
The two accused, Edward Lemerigum and Loisisa Letiyo entered a no guilty plea when they appeared before Maralal Principal Magistrate James Wanganya.
The court heard that on 14th November 2023, the two accused were arrested by police in ledero village, Samburu west sub county while carrying 36 pieces of ivory weighing 77 kilograms and with an estimated street value of Sh7.7 million.
The prosecution produced the elephant tusks which were stashed in two gunny bags in court as exhibits.
The magistrate released the two accused with a Sh 1 million bond each and surety of a similar amount until the mention of the case which was set for December 6, 2023 and the hearing on February 26, 2024.
The accused failed to raise the Sh 1 million bond and were remanded at the Maralal GK prison.
