UDA party set to register over 15 million members ahead of 2027 general elections

The United Democratic Alliance party targets to register over 15 million members out of the 22 million Kenyans registered by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as voters ahead of 2027 general elections.

The party’s Secretary General (SG) Cleophas Malala said this will give a clear win to avoid the historical cycle where the Presidential candidate who comes second in the elections moves to the Supreme Court to oppose the elections.

He spoke at TM grounds in Narok county during a UDA party delegate meeting attended by Governor Patrick Ntutu, his deputy Tamalinye Koech, MPS Johana Ngeno (Emurua Dikirr), Kitilai Ntutu (Narok South), Ken Aramat (Narok East), Gabriel Tongoyo (Narok West) and Rebecca Tonkei (County MP).

Also in attendance was East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) nominated MP David Sankok and former Governor Samuel Tunai.

The SG faulted the opposition leader Raila Odinga for always criticizing government agenda without giving any credible solution to the problems affecting the nation.

He explained the elections will be done in every polling station where each polling station will elect 20 leaders.

The 20 officials from the polling stations will then merge with their counterparts in the ward level to elect 20 leaders from the ward level.

Malala said this formula will be replicated in the constituencies, counties and national level, meaning those who eye for the National post must be elected in the ward level.

“Those who will be involved in the elections are those registered as members of the party and elected from the ward level,” he said.

While citing that 850 MCAs out of 1450 MCAs in the country were elected on an UDA ticket, the SG asked all elected leaders to support the governors elected on an UDA ticket in order to spur development in the counties.

“Here in Narok, all elected leaders should support the governor because you are all in UDA. This is not a formula it is a direction from the party,” he said.

However, he said, the direction does not overlook the oversight role of the Members of the County Assembly (MCA) to ensure that the money from the county is properly spent.

Former Governor Tunai said he campaigned for governor Ntutu and most of the elected leaders on UDA ticket to ensure the party remains strong in the county.

“We want to ensure that in 2027, all the elective seats will be won by UDA. This will be done through uniting and valuing our people,” he said, asking for a massive registration of the party members in the county.

On his part, Governor Ntutu lauded the election of Malala as the party SG saying he has the capacity of driving the party forward.

Ntutu asked the delegates to register many people in the polling stations in the exercise that will begin on Monday June 12, 2023.

“We want to start registering our members early enough. We are targeting to register at least 300, 000 people out of the 420, 000 registered voters in the county,” he said.
