Police in Bunyala Sub County have arrested a Ugandan Police Officer in connection with the killing of a Kenyan fisherman in Lake Victoria on Monday night,
Speaking to the press in his office on Tuesday, Busia Acting County Commissioner Kipchumba Ruto said that,Boya Mohammed,27, a coxswain in the UPDF military camp was arrested on Tuesday morning in Sumba island on the Kenyan side after he jumped out of the boat before swimming for some hours.
“Members of the public informed the Kenya Coastguard Service officers that they had found the Ugandan who participated in the killing of a Kenyan last night,” he said adding that the officers moved swiftly to Sumba Island before taking him to port Victoria police station.
Ruto said that the Ugandan officer will be arraigned Wednesday and charged with the killing of the Kenyan fisherman.
‘The body of the Kenyan fisherman who was shot and killed on our waters has been taken to Port Victoria Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem,” he said adding that another one is undergoing treatment at the facility.
He called upon the Ugandan security to refrain from using firearms on innocent fishermen.
“Their job is to immobilize and not to take away lives,” he said adding that the Kenyan government is looking forward to the East African integration.
The administrator further stated that he was in talks with the Ugandan Resident Commissioner in Namaingo and Busia Uganda and they have been solving issues amicably.
“This one was done by junior security officers with a view to distorting issues of Lake Victoria,” he said.
He called upon the local residents to remain calm as the two governments resolve the issue and ensure that justice is served to the family of the person who was shot during the incident.
The fishermen engaged in confrontation and resisted orders from the Ugandan security officers who wanted to arrest them and confiscate their boat and fish.
