Crops of unknown value have been destroyed in the Umoja Mbuyu location of Nyandarua County after the walls of the Umoja Mbuyu dam collapsed due to heavy rainfall.
Confirming the incident, Nyandarua North Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Anjerine Were said that the incident that happened at 6 AM on Wednesday had no casualties, saying that the water had already started following into the nearby stream before fully breaking the walls.
"The wall of the barrier at the Umoja Mbuyu dam collapsed causing all the water which was at the dam to flow downstream. It's suspected the wall collapsed at around 6.00 am. No fatalities were reported although unknown value of crops including onions and potatoes were destroyed at Pesi area," said the DCC.
The DCC however said that she had dispatched a team of area chiefs and assistant chiefs to determine the acreage of the crops that got damaged and would be giving a comprehensive report after meeting the residents in a baraza scheduled soon.
Umoja Mbuyu division is in Nyandarua North and borders Laikipia County southwards.
The DCC visited the scene together with the sub-county police commander (SCPC) and the critical infrastructure protection unit commander (CIPU).
Other officials from the county government and national government visited the area and warned residents against crossing overflowing rivers.
Elsewhere in the Nyakio division in the Kinangop area, Nyandarua County, a section of the Haraka shopping center is flooded due to a heavy downpour experienced on Tuesday night.
There were no accidents or any damages reported and the residents have been advised to be more cautious.
The area MCA has been contacted to provide an excavator to assist in unblocking the trenches and directing the water to other trenches.
