A wave of fear has gripped some villages in Suba North following an invasion of hyenas which have killed scores of domestic animals.

The villagers claimed that the hyenas move in packs, breaking pens before killing domestic animals.

“We have been invaded by the hyenas for the last one week, the Kenya Wildlife Service should act fast and cage the animals,” said Otieno, a resident of Lambwe East.

He said at least eight donkeys and four goats have been killed following the attacks.

Lambwe East Location Chief Bernard Ouma said he had received reports about residents encountering hyenas.

He said the wild animals have been spotted both during the day and at night.

“We believe their habitat is on the hills near the affected villages. They come out and attack domestic animals at night,” Mr Ouma said.

Hills surrounding affected villages include Ruri and Kibanga.

Residents expressed fears that the hyenas may soon attack people as well.

Mr Ouma said no one has been injured since the invasions started.

He cautioned the locals to be careful. “If the animals can attack and kill donkeys, imagine what they can do to humans,” he warned.

Residents called on the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to repatriate the animals to Ruma National Park.

County KWS Warden Zipora Mideva said she has not received official reports of the attacks.

“I have only heard of the information through the media,” she said.

Nevertheless, the KWS official said her officers will set up traps in affected villages to get rid of the hyenas.

The traps will capture the animals before they are relocated to other places.

Ms Mideva said the animals could be from the neighbouring hills.
