The National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has defended President William Ruto on his stand against the war on corruption in the country.
Speaking during a fundraiser at KK Tharaine Secondary School in Tigania West constituency, Mr Wetang’ula categorically said that the three options that the President gave to the corrupt people; relocating, going to jail, and going to heaven are real and have been applied in various countries who are serious on public matters and especially war on corruption.
He said in Japan for instance, when one commits a crime that hurts the citizens, he does what is referred to as harakiri which is taking one’s life, and it’s the same way as taking oneself to heaven if you have wronged the people.
“Those who are not used to reading as many books as some of us do will take the President’s statement to mean that he will kill people,” he said.
“President Ruto has no history of killing people and is not about to start something that he has never done,” said Mr Wetang’ula.
If you refer to Roman history, he added, they say that if you are given a responsibility to protect the public good and let them down, then you should fall on your sword without waiting for anybody to come and deal with you.
“This is what the President was referring to when he said corrupt people should go to jail which means you will go through the court, you get out of the country if you are not a Kenyan, or you take yourself to heaven through your own means,” said Wetangula.
He added: “But the most important thing is not to focus on the figurative speech where we have imageries, allegories, and parables, but the message he was trying to convey. Those who have ears heard it but have also seen the habitual opposers continuing to oppose it.”
He insisted that anybody who defends the corrupt is an enemy of the people of Kenya since the government’s agenda is to ensure the taxpayer’s money is used in meaningful development projects as it should be.
He added that the President has been going all over the country preaching peace and inspecting development projects. This is what it should be since this was a clear indication that he is concerned with every corner of this country.
“We need to be peaceful to build our nation and fight corruption anywhere and everywhere we see it,” said Mr Wetangula.
The speaker was accompanied by MPs Martin Wanyonyi (Webuye East), George Kariuki (Ndia), Njoki Njeru (Embu County), Kirima Nguchine (Imenti Central), Mugambi Rindikiiri (Buuri), Mpuru Aburi (Tigania East), Dan Kiili (Igembe Central), Julius Taitumu (Igembe North), Dorothy Muthoni (Nominated) and the host John Mutunga.
