Woman fined Sh 3,000 for stealing maize from her father in law

A middle aged woman was fined Sh 3,000 by a Kabarnet Court after she pleaded guilty to stealing 4 kilogrammes of green maize from her father in law.
Catherine Jebet appeared before Principal Magistrate Caroline Ateya charged that on September 17, this year, at around 8am at Seretunin area in Baringo Central sub-county within Baringo County, she stole green maize valued at Sh 1,000, the property of Solomon Ruto.
The accused told the court that she desperately needed the maize to feed her ailing mother back home in Pemwai Village.
“I plead guilty to the offence of stealing maize and ask for leniency since it was not my wish to commit the offense. I stole the maize so that I can feed my mother who is battling with a terminal disease,” she said.
Prosecution Counsel George Mong’are told the court that the accused who was caught red-handed harvesting the four kilograms of green maize had tried to escape from the farm but was cornered and apprehended by the complainant who escorted her to Seretunin police post with the exhibits before being arraigned in court on Monday.
The Principal Magistrate ordered the accused to pay a fine of Sh 3,000 in default serve a jail term of two months and instructed that the maize be returned to the owner.
Meanwhile, Brian Koech pleaded guilty to stealing green maize with a market value of Sh 1000 on September 17, this year, at around 8 a.m. within the Seretunin area from the shamba of Elima Argut.
The accused who was nearly mobbed by members of the public while told the court that his family was sleeping hungry thus he had to steal the maize to feed them.
Ateya ordered him to pay a fine of Sh 2,000 or in default serve one-month imprisonment.
