More than 60 girls at Kamogiboi Secondary school in Chepalungu spent the night in the cold after a fire gutted their dormitory on Sunday night, an incident that saw students and the institution lose property worth more than Sh1 million.

Confirming the incident, Chepalungu Sub-County Police Commander Phanton Analo said the cause of the fire was yet to be known saying it was being suspected to be an electric fault but investigations into the fire incident have begun.

"We are yet to know what cause the fore but we cannot rule out electric fault," he said, adding that nobody was injured during the incident.

The School Deputy Principal Kipchengo Cheruiyot said the fire broke out while learners were in class for evening classes.

He said the alarm was raised by school watchmen who mobilised locals to try and put out the fire.

The Deputy Principal said the fire spread within 30 minutes and engulfed the entire semi-permanent building. "We tried to contain the fire but it was so unfortunate as it engulfed the building within a short time," he said.

Cheruiyot said nothing was salvaged during the incidents, adding that the students lost all their belongings and appealed for well-wishers to donate so that learning can continue. "We are appealing for support so that students can get what to use and continue with their studies," he said.
