Meru Women Representative Elizabeth Kailemia yesterday disbursed Sh5.3 million of bursary through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) to the most vulnerable students in the County.
Speaking during the event at her offices in Meru town, Ms Kailemia said the fund would benefit 826 students from 279 learning institutions including secondary schools, universities, and tertiary colleges.
She said the majority of the beneficiaries were allocated enough money to be in a position of clearing their fees or the huge part of it.”
“The 826 students are only those sponsored by the NGAAF but we have other beneficiaries who have been sponsored by friends as well as foundations that I have been working closely with,” said Mrs Kailemia.
The lowest amount allocated was Sh5,000 for students in day secondary schools.
Ms Kailemia also called for harmonisation of bursaries from various sources to ensure there was no duplication in terms of funding and as a result, ensure every needy student in the County got a share.
“My appeal to our leaders including MPs, MCAs, and the Governor is that we should have a database of all the needy students in the county and see how each of us will help those that we can. This way, every needy student will get consideration,” said Ms Kailemia.
The County MP was accompanied by a section of MCAs led by Caleb Mutethia (Municipality) who echoed her sentiments, adding that the move will be a game changer in uplifting the education standards in the County.
“We are calling on our leaders to ensure that they work together for the sake of the residents and especially needy students. When they do this, the bright kids from poor families will have an assurance that their education will be funded and, in the end, bring development in their respective families,” said Mr Mutethia.
