Embu County Government has been urged to take advantage of the rain season that the country is experiencing to plant more trees in order to combat climate change that had pushed the country into famine.
Kamiu Horticultural Nurseries Supply Director Benson Mbogo Njuki said that by the county government taking advantage of the rain season the country is experiencing and planting trees, it will help Embu County government to mitigate climate change which had taken a toll on the country.
He added that the move would also boost the President’s initiative of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
Mbogo also implored other counties to move with speed and plant more trees in order to fight the climate change crisis in Kenya.
He said that despite climate change being a global threat, it could be addressed by partners coming together to plant more trees so as to fight the menace.
Njuki called on farmers in the Lake Region Economic Bloc to shift from planting traditional crops like sugarcane, and other crops that took long to mature and harvest to planting fast maturing fruit trees.
He argued that fruit trees like oranges, Hass avocado and macadamia take a short duration to mature and have more value as compared to traditional crops like sugarcane that took long and have low value.
“We urge them if they can shift from the tradition of planting traditional crops to planting fruit trees that take a shorter time to mature, they will get more value as compared to other plants,” he said.
He said that he would be training farmers in the Lake Region Economic Bloc on the need of shifting from planting traditional crops.
Dickson Kivuti Njage said that lack of the rains which was occasioned by the climate change had taken a toll on their tree planting exercise but they braved the issue by having water reservoirs.
He called on the youths to support the President’s initiative of planting 15 billion trees by embracing the idea of tree planting.
Peter Mureithi Njiru, an environmentalist, said that Embu County Government and other partners embracing tree planting initiative would help to serve the next generation.
He called on the County Government to partner with various partners to conserve the environment by planting many trees.
