David Mugonyi replaces Chiloba at Communications Authority
By Peter Ochieng
David Mugonyi has been appointed Communications Authority of Kenya's new Director General (DG).
His appointment was confirmed through a letter from Eliud Owalo, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for ICT and the digital economy, to CAK's chairperson Mary Wambui.
In the letter dated Wednesday, 20th December, 2023, the CS directed her to formalise Mugonyi's appointment.
"Reference is made to the above and a letter from the Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service (Ref: SH/GM/22) dated 19th December 2023 (endorsed) conveying approval for the appointment of Mr David Mugonyi as the Director General of the Communications Authority of Kenya," said the CS.
"You may now proceed and take appropriate action to formalise the appointment."
He replaces Ezra Simiyu Chiloba, who resigned in October, 2023.
Chiloba landed the position in 2021, after serving as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
He was in charge during the 2017 general elections, when retired president Uhuru Kenyatta's victory was nullified by the Supreme Court.
On the other hand, before his resignation from CAK in October, Chiloba was in September suspended following an internal audit that accused him of financial impropriety.
He, alongside nine other top officials at the authority allegedly mishandled mortgages and allowances running into millions of shillings. Chiloba denied any wrongdoing.
Until his appointment, Mugonyi has been serving as Head of Presidential Communication Service (PCS).
