Two siblings aged eight and six years old from Olemalit primary school drowned in an abandoned gold mine pit at Lolgorian area in Transmara South Sub County, in Narok.
While confirming the incident, Narok County Police Commander John Kizito said the incident was reported by the Chairperson of the Gold miners Simon Odoyo, after the residents saw a floating body in the pool of water.
“Upon arriving at the scene, the police found the body of the six-year-old boy Kelvin Kiprotich having been retrieved by the residents from an abandoned gold mine pit, where the water body had been formed due to the ongoing heavy rains,” said the police commander.
The officers and the members of the public sought assistance from the nearby BAO Hill Company to help drain the water from the dip pit, where the company provided an excavator to drain the water.
Sadly, upon draining the water, another body of Dorcas Chelangat, eight years old, was recovered from the pit. The two deceased were children of Sharon Langat.
The bodies were moved to Longisa Level four hospital awaiting autopsy.
Following the incident, the county police commander confirmed that police have launched investigations to unearth the circumstances that led to the drowning.
The members of the public have also been advised to take care of their children during this festival season when the rains are falling in most parts of the county.
