Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed after a fire razed a dormitory at Nyakoiba Secondary School in Kenyenya Sub County, Kisii last Friday morning.
Speaking after visiting the school, Kisii County Commissioner Tom Anjere empathized with the students and school management as the facility hosted about 200 students who lost their belongings in the inferno.
He however confirmed that no student was injured during the incident but urged the County Disaster Committee to develop new ways of preventing fires in learning institutions which had become rampant in recent times.
He directed the committee to ensure that fire hydrants and fire engines were available in every sub-county so that the county improves on its response to fire disasters in schools.
The CC pointed out the need to train boarding masters and student leaders on fire safety as well as the existence of fire extinguishers in every school dormitory.
Anjere who was accompanied by the County Security Team, the County Disaster Committee, and the County Director of Education during the visit to the school, said the Directorate of Investigations (DCI) had commenced investigations to establish the cause of the fire.
The area MCA Peter Okerio (Bosoti/Sengera Ward) who supported the affected students with a donation of 100 blankets lauded the well-wishers who had responded swiftly to the plight of the students and called for additional support from the local leaders.
Samson Omwange who spoke on behalf of the school sponsors called on the DCI to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter adding that it was not the first time the school had lost property to a fire.
The school sponsors, that is the Seventh Day Adventist Church, also donated blankets, mattresses, and metal boxes to the affected students.
