Four people have been confirmed dead after consuming illicit brew at Kubweye village in Kuria West Sub County.

Kuria West Sub County police commander Cleti Kimaiyo in a report sent to the media showed that the four including the brewer succumbed after consuming the illicit brew.

Eight more are still fighting for their life at Migori Referral Hospital after consuming the suspected poisonous illicit brew.

Samjomen Medical Health Superintendent Martin Mwita said that the affected patients exhibited difficulties in breathing, vomiting, diarrhoea and complained about abdominal pain.

The residents of Kubweye and Kunguku villages led by Patel Matiko said that the four were rushed to Samjomen Hospital in Mabera where they died while receiving the first aid treatment.

The locals from the two affected villages decried the way the police handled the fight on illicit brew and blamed the local administrators for the escalation of illicit liquor dens in the area.

“We are calling upon the government to take stern actions against sellers and brewers of the illicit liquor and help stamp out the vice that has caused many deaths in the villages”, said Matiko.

The bodies of the deceased have been moved to Akdiva Hospital Morgue in Suna West Sub County awaiting autopsy to establish the cause of death.
