Kabarnet court orders murder suspect to remain in custody for 14 days

A middle-aged person has appeared before a Kabarnet court to answer charges of killing another man.

However, the accused, Stanley Kipchumba, could not take plea after the investigation officer Frank Opunga filed a miscellaneous application to detain the accused for 14 days to enable them to complete investigating the matter.

Principal Magistrate Caroline Ateya after hearing the application granted the investigation officer his wish and ordered the accused to be remanded at Kabarnet police station for the said period.

“I pray this court to remand the suspect at Kabarnet police station for 14 days to enable us complete investigations,” Opunga said.

Mr Opunga told the court that the suspect is believed to have murdered Alfonse Chepkangor on October 29, this year, at an unknown time in Baringo North Sub County.

The officer in his submission told the Principal Magistrate that they needed more time to trace all relevant witnesses to record statements before arraigning the suspect in court to take a plea.

The investigating officer further argued that an autopsy of the deceased body should be conducted to determine the exact cause of the death.

“I have considered the application by the prosecution and issues raised by the accused. The application is allowed as prayed,” Ateya said.

In her ruling, Ateya ordered the suspect be remanded at Kabarnet police station for 14 days and be escorted to Baringo County Referral Hospital for mental assessment before taking plea on November 13.
