Murang’a Governor Dr. Irungu Kang’ata has called upon a section of residents who are in conflict with Del Monte Kenya over a piece of land to shelve their interests and allow the county to utilize the land in a way that will benefit the entire community.

The residents, among them the Kandara Residents Association, claimed ownership of 1400 acres of land situated at Makenji that Del Monte ceded to the county government and held demonstrations last week claiming to have fought for the possession of the piece of land for a long time.

The association, which represents thousands of residents from Murang’a and Kiambu counties who are squatters, has been claiming some of the company’s uncultivated land.

Speaking on Saturday, July 1, Kang’ata assured the residents that the county government was not going to engage in the conflict with the residents and was already making plans on how to utilize the land received.

The governor said the county government intends to use the land to construct a level five hospital as well as shift the Kenneth Matiba Eye and Dental hospital from the current rental property where they pay Sh1.4 million in rent every month.

“Our vision for that land is to build a hospital that will serve the people of Makenji, Kabati and Wempa,” he said.

The land is also expected to host an industrial park and a public school that will serve the residents of Murang’a south and Ithanga sub-counties.

Kanga’ta urged the residents to avoid using force and consider embracing dialogue and also allow the county government to utilize the land as promised adding that it will bring services closer to the people.
