KCB leads FKF Premier League table after matchweek 5
By Robert Mutasi
KCB FC have had a great start to the 2024 FKF Premier League season, top of the standings after that excellent run in the first five matches.
With four wins and a draw, the team comfortably leads the pack at the top of the table on 13 points.
It has also exhibited immense attacking verve, netting 10 goals while conceding just one for a healthy goal difference of +9.
Its defense has also been stupendous, since it has remained unbeaten with one of the best defensive records in the league so far.
Second-placed Kariobangi Sharks follow closely with 11 points from three wins and two draws.
The Sharks have also managed to keep their sheet clean pretty well, with only three goals conceded, while their forward line has netted eight goals.
In this light, their consistent form has positioned them as strong contenders in the early stages of the competition, and they will be keen to challenge KCB's top spot as the season progresses.
Third-placed AFC Leopards, one of the most popular clubs in Kenya, closely follows with 10 points, tied on goal difference but leading fourth-placed Mara Sugar.
Both teams have been promising and have each won three out of their five games so far, but they will need to improve on their consistency if they are to mount a serious challenge for the title.
Lying fifth is another powerhouse in Kenyan football, Tusker FC, with eight points.
This is after two wins, two draws, and one loss; they, however, need to start garnering more points in the coming weeks if they are to catch up with the league leaders.
Bandari FC has an equal number of points but has played one game fewer, meaning they could start rising up the table with a win in their next fixture.
Gor Mahia, the reigning champions, has had a rather slow start to their campaign, sitting seventh with six points, having played only two matches due to fixture congestion.
They remain unbeaten and look to make their way up the table quickly as games in hand get played.
On the tail end of the table, Sofapaka and Kakamega Homeboyz lie in the relegation zone with a paltry two points from five matches apiece.
They are yet to win a game, and their abysmal defensive records, especially Kakamega Homeboyz, who have leaked 10 goals, are of much concern.
Meanwhile, Ulinzi Stars have two points but sit just above them in the relegation playoff spot because of a better goal difference than Sofapaka and Kakamega Homeboyz.
As the league enters its next set of fixtures, all eyes will be on the fight for the top just as much as it will on the looming relegation battle.
That means the upcoming matchweeks will be all the more tantalizing for fans countrywide as so many teams stand separated by just a few points in both the top and bottom halves of the table.
