Kenya read to host Sudan peace talks, says Ruto

By Peter Ochieng

President William Ruto on Friday said Kenya is ready to play a role in ensuring peace and stability in Sudan.

The Head of State in a statement shared by State House fronted Kenya as the best place to host peace talks, between members of the warring factions.

He said he makes the offer in the spirit of brotherhood.

"We make this offer in the spirit of brotherhood, peace and solidarity as an acceptable neutral venue and also as an engaged stakeholder well-seized with the challenges facing our region."

“We invite the parties to take full advantage of this opportunity and urge IGAD, AU and the UN to mobilise an effective international coalition to support a comprehensive peacemaking agenda for Sudan,” he added.

The Head of State said long lasting solution to Sudan's challenges is within reach.

"Kenya is strongly persuaded that a peacefully negotiated solution to the conflict in Sudan is within reach and, as always, stands ready to make our contribution."

Fighting erupted in Sudan on April 15, 2023 between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the capital, Khartoum, before spreading to other cities.

Military leader Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo of RSF, have agreed to end the fighting and pursue dialogue.

Sudan is yet to experience long lasting peace, since former President Omar el Bashir was forced out of office in 2019.
