Kindiki reacts to calls of deputising Ruto in 2027

By Peter Ochieng

Interior and National administration Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki has reacted to the ongoing succession debate, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The debate has gathered pace especially in Mt Kenya, with Kindiki's name and that of Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro being mentioned as possible president William Ruto's running mate, in place of deputy president Rigathi Gachagua.

In response, Kindiki via a statement posted on his verried X page on Tuesday said it is tactless and primitive to talk about 2027 or future elections, slightly a year after the last polls.

"Political talk about the 2027 or other future elections a year after a general election is tactless, anti-people and primitive. It is a blot on the maturity of our democracy," he said.

Kindiki stated that his hands are full with ensuring that Kenyans across the country are safe.

"President Ruto has assigned me the role of championing his administration's programs for the transformation of our country into a sustainably safe homeland for this and future generations. This sensitive role demands relentless focus and total abstinence from all manner of distracting misadventure."

He said those involved in the succession debate are free to continue doing so, provided his name is left out of the conversation.

"The ongoing debate ought to stop, but if it must proceed, I respectfully request that my name should not be dragged in it."

His sentiments are similar to those expressed by Gachagua.

“Let us not be transfixed with childish politics of succession, of elections. We have barely come from elections, one and a half years. People want services. Let us refrain from politics,” said Gachagua.

“Those scheming to divide the region should know that the people of Mt Kenya are intelligent and are aware of what is happening. Those seeking to divide us are enemies of the region. Our relevance in national leadership lies on our unity. We know what disunity and divisive politics in 1992 and 1997 elections did.”

He urged Mt Kenya leaders to rally behind president William Ruto's administration.
