MCK condemns fights among journalists

By Peter Ochieng

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has condemned fights among journalists, which go a long way in jeopardising credibility within the profession.

In a strong worded statement on Tuesday, MCK Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Omwoyo said the Council is against any forms of violence, including those perpetuated by journalists against their own.

"The Council unequivocally condemns all forms of violence, including those perpetrated by members of the press against their own or on members of the public," said the CEO.

"Journalists resorting to physical fights and engaging in slander not only jeopardises their proffessional credibility but also undermines the principals of responsible journalism."

Members of the Fourth Estate, Omwoyo added, have a cardinal duty to conduct themselves with integrity and decorum.

"Journalists have a responsibility to conduct themselves with integrity and decorum even in the face of aggression. We encourage all journalists to uphold their commitment to truth, accuracy and objectivity, and prioritise respectful and constructive criticism over personal attacks or violence," he stated.

Omwoyo's statement follows an ugly incident involving three journalists in Siaya county over the weekend.

Siaya county-based Radio Africa Group correspondent Josiah Odanga was allegedly verbally and physically assaulted by K24 TV's Mary Goretty Juma and Royal Media Service reporter George Amolo.

A scuffle reportedly ensued after the two allegedly tried to block Odanga and other journalists from covering a news event at Karariw Primary School, where Gem Member of Parliament (MP) Elisha Odhiambo was distributing bursaries to needy students.

He is said to have suffered a blow to the head, besides his mobile phone and smart watch being damaged.

The matter was reported to the police.

Omwoyo confirmed that the three journalists are accredited by MCK, making them free to cover news events in any part of the country.
