Gem Member of Parliament, Elisha Odhiambo has asked Siaya County Government to allocate more funds to County Bursary Fund to enable more bright and needy students access education.

The MP wants Governor James Orengo to emulate his counterparts in other Counties who put in adequate resources to support bright but needy students pursue education.

Odhiambo lamented that the County had allocated a paltry Sh. 110 million shillings for bursary, compared to other regions that set aside as high as Sh. 400 million.

He was speaking Thursday at Nyamninia Secondary School in his Constituency where he joined the students and staff for a luncheon to celebrate the school’s good performance during last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations.

He said that Siaya County must enhance the kitty, arguing that it was ridiculous that other regions appear to value education more than the County that boasts of producing professors and specialists in different fields.

“Siaya County leadership must pull up its socks and emulate the rest given the high level of need,” he said.

The legislator called on elected leaders to stop political squabbles and concentrate their energy towards service delivery.

Odhiambo said it was the responsibility of all leaders to ensure that all bright and needy students are supported to access education.

He at the same time challenged students to remain focused on their studies and avoid wasting energy on things that will divert their attention.
