Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leadership in Homa Bay county has embarked on a campaign to popularize the party in the county.

The campaign comes in the wake of inroads made by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party into the region.

Governor Gladys Wanga who is the county ODM Chairperson said the party was opening offices and holding meetings in wards and constituencies to counter political advances made by rival parties.

She said they will not give room to UDA to gain roots in Homa Bay.

Homa Bay has been one of the strongholds of ODM since it was initiated in 2007. Residents have been overwhelmingly voting for candidates sponsored by the party for all elective positions.

Governor Wanga and party branch Secretary Ong’ondo Were Saturday convened a meeting of the party officials and other elected leaders where they came up with some resolutions to reinvigorate the party at the grassroots.

Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga and majority leader Richard Ogindo were also present.

Wanga said the meeting was meant to revitalize the party at the grassroots level.

“The meeting reaffirms our commitment to make ODM remain a party of choice in Homa Bay. The principles of social justice and democracy remain fundamental to our party's ideology as championed by our leader Raila Odinga,” Wanga said.

MPs Lilian Gogo (Rangwe), Eve Obara (Kabondo Kasipul) and Adipo Okuome (Karachuonyo) also attended the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting in Homa Bay town, Wanga said they resolved to establish offices in all 40 wards to ensure the party has its roots across the county.

“All ward offices must be in operation from December 1. Leaders will be visiting the offices regularly to undertake activities like registering members,” she added.

The party will also build an office in the county. She also asked other party officials to help in recruitment of more members.

“Reconciliation is key to ensure the party remains numerically strong. We have realized that some members are involved in infighting,” Wanga said.

She said they will hold regular meetings henceforth.

The meetings will be held from the ward level with the climax being the county ODM convention.

Were argued that their unity as officials and residents will ensure ODM remains strong in Homa Bay.

“We want to see youth and women leagues meet on their own. Such meetings will be done regularly before a convention for the county in December,” Were said.

“Homa Bay and the Nyanza region as a whole is firmly behind the ODM and leader Raila Odinga,” he added.
