Uasin Gishu County Peace Committee has held a forum in Eldoret with political leaders, elders and other stakeholders to discuss ways to enhance and maintain peace and unity in the strategic North rift county.

This comes weeks after the county experienced demonstrations staged by allegedly young generation Gen Z that saw damage to property worth millions and businesses closing down.

The peace committee led by chairperson Rev. Timothy Bamai said their agenda is to ensure the county has perpetual peace.

“Our county is home to many communities from different ethnic backgrounds and we want them to live in peace and harmony. We do not want anyone to incite against any other group, we are saying we are one,” he said.

“We also want our children when exercising their democratic rights to picket peacefully, to shun any other people coming in their midst taking advantage to cause looting and destroying other people’s properties,” noted Rev. Bamai.

Uasin Gishu Myoot Council of Elders’ chairperson Alexander Mursi said all the leaders, peace committee, elders and other stakeholders like the business community, have condemned what happened as a result of the protests and called on the young generation to stop further protests as they await the president to make amendments in line with their grievances.

At the same time, the peace forum members suggested that in future youth should embrace open and peaceful dialogue whenever they want to air out their grievances instead of causing mayhem that results to destruction and loss of property and lives.

The peace committee identified various resolutions towards ensuring peace is conserved in Uasin Gishu including coming together to affirm peaceful coexistence within and amongst the cosmopolitan community in the county.

Senator Jackson Mandago who was accompanied by members of parliament, Julius Rutto( Kesses), Janet Sitienei (Turbo) and a host of MCAs, urged the young generation to stop further protests, noting that the government has made the commitment address the issues they raised.

“There are commitments the president has made, we in parliament will definitely listen to what you have said, what the president has recommended and where it is required to be amended, we shall do so to facilitate these commitments to move the nation forward,” added Mandago.

He further called on the general public that whenever they are exercising their constitutional rights to picket, they should not allow others to take advantage and cause violence which negate the course of the original idea.
