Popular Kenyan blogger cum politician Robert Alai has dropped his Nyando parliamentary bid and shifted his focus to Kileleshwa ward where he is now contesting the Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat.
Speaking to the Star on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, Alai said the move was inspired by his desire to fight and bring change to his constituents.
"I realized people do not have to fight for their rights directly...there are people you elect to represent you and voice your issues,” he told the publication.
Defending the decision to move from a higher to a lower seat, Alai noted that if elected MCA, he will be closer to his constituents which will help him identify their needs and serve them effectively.
“If you were vying for MP and then you changed to MCA, you have upgraded and not demoted yourself. In public service, being closer to the common man is an upgrade. Don't let your ego be bruised with chants of "umeshuka bei." Public service is not an ego trip,” he opined.

"If you say that you had shown interest in an MP seat so you cannot go for an MCA seat you are not helping Wananchi. It is a selfish gain and it shows that you wanted to satisfy your ego.
"I have been in this city for a long and if you ask somebody in Nyayo Estate Embakasi where I was a Chairman for a period of time, you will understand that I brought a lot of changes there,”he said.
Alai’s announcement elicited mixed reactions with a section of Kenyans supporting him, while others criticised the move.
Media personality Shaffie Weru said: “My MCA choice, Robert Alai. Any candidate who has plastered posters around my hood deserves zero votes.”
“From Nyando MP to Kileleshwa MCA. Robert Alai is a big joker and a conman without ambitions. Keeps on camouflaging and seeking political sympathy of getting direct nominations from the ODM Party. He must be rejected at all levels,” Boniface Mwangi tweeted
Ahmed Mohammed (Asmali): “Now ODM should grant Robert Alai a direct ticket. Good move.”
