The National Police Service (NPS)has commenced disciplinary action against a traffic police officer who was captured forcing himself into a private car through its window in the city centre. In a statement released on Wednesday night, NPS condemned the incident, adding that the officer has been identified and is being dealt with in accordance to set laws and regulations. NPS called upon its officer to maintain discipline and adhere to all the set laws, failure to which disciplinary action will be taken against those found guilty. “The National Police Service has taken note of an incident which has been trending on social media, whereby a police officer on traffic duties was captured forcing himself into a private vehicle. The said officer has been positively identified and is undergoing disciplinary action. “We reiterate that it is imperative for individual police officers to discharge their mandate professionally, diligently and with high levels of discipline,” NPS posted on its official Twitter handle. After gaining access to the car, the officer drove it off, with reports indicating that he took the car to Central Police station. By press time, it was still not clear what led to the tiff between the officer and the driver. In Kenyan law, traffic officers on duty are allowed to access a motorist’s car but not violently. “It shall be lawful for any police officer in uniform to stop any vehicle, and for any police officer, licensing officer or inspector to enter any vehicle; to drive any vehicle or cause any vehicle to be driven upon reasonable suspicion of any offence under this Act,” section 12 of the Traffic Act, 2015reads in part.
