The Moi University main campus fraternity in Kesses, Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County is mourning the demise of two students.
The duo reportedly drowned while swimming in a quarry, near the institution on Monday.
The bodies, according to Kesses police boss Charles Chacha were retrieved and subsequently transferred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) morgue, awaiting postmortem.
"We are investigating the incident and will provide a full report once the investigations are complete," he said.
He added that police received a report of the incident from locals, but efforts to rescue the students proved futile. They have been identified as Wycliffe Machuki and Chris Otieno, third- and second-year students respectively.
The sad incident was reported after Moi University management announced reopening of the institution later this week, following weeks of closure.
Elsewhere, Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Education (KCSE) candidates at a school in Kakamega County are mourning their colleague, who died on Tuesday morning.
Reports indicate that Calistus Wamboye Oteu, a candidate at Ebubere Secondary School in Mumias East Constituency, suddenly died while waiting for the start of Tuesday’s exam.
His parents Patrick and Dorcas Oteu say the 19-year-old left their home in good spirits, only for them to receive devastating news of his sudden death.
He was accompanied by his sibling, who is also sitting for the national examination. They said he never exhibited any signs of illness.
His body was moved to the St. Mary’s Hospital mortuary. A postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Separately, another KCSE candidate passed away on Sunday in Tigania West, Meru County, hours before the start of the national examinations.
Meru County Commissioner Jacob Ouma confirmed his death.
KCSE started on Monday in over 10 centres across the country. Over 900,000 candidates are sitting for the exam.
