Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has today issued a ban on hawking activities on side-walks and roads within the Nairobi CBD.
During a meeting with the leadership of CBD hawkers, City Inspectorate Officers, Mobility and works sectors at the City Hall buildings, Sakaja maintained that Nairobi has to be "a city of Order"
"That one is an irreducable minimum even for their own safety," Sakaja said.
This comes a week after a video went viral of city council officers banding eggs trolley of hawkers in the Nairobi CBD with some of the eggs and smokies seen to have scattered on the ground during the exercise.
Later Governor Sakaja was forced to apologize for the incident and compensate the hawkers Ksh 10,000 each for the inconveniences they incurred.
However, Sakaja insisted that Hawkers and informal traders deserve an opportunity to eke out a living in an orderly and dignified in a dignified manner that also considers pedestrians, vehicular traffic and shop owners.
Governor Sakaja announced that the County is concluding back lanes for relocation of 1,000 hawkers and agreed with the hawkers on a number of measures including operating time and spaces.
"The hawkers and inspectorate officers look forward to an amicable working relationship and will symbolically show this in a football match between them during the Sakaja Super Cup." Sakaja said.
Sakaja urged city council officers to act confidently, firmly and fairly while Executing the new orders insisting that" The rules must apply to everyone "no matter who it is" A rule is a rule" Sakaja said.
Sakaja reiterated that no one is above the law and the new orders must be adhered by everyone.
