Body recovered floating in River Narok

Police in Narok town have recovered the body of a 40-year-old man that was floating at River Narok Monday evening.

Narok County police commander John Kizito said the incident was reported by members of the public who had spotted the body floating in the river near Narok town.

The commander added that the body had no visible injuries and suspected that the man had drowned in the upper part of the river and his body swept downstream.

He however noted that the man had not yet been identified calling on members of the public who may have their kin missing to report to the police so that the deceased can be identified and accorded a decent send off.

The body is currently lying at the Narok County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation awaiting post-mortem and identification.

Cases of drowning have been rampant in the area as many rivers are swollen following the heavy downpour that has been experienced in the entire county.

Last week, a lorry transporting fuel to a Maasai Mara National Reserve petrol station that had three occupants on board plunged into river Mara when the driver was trying to cross the swollen river.

Fortunately, one of the occupants escaped unhurt. However, one person died, and the body recovered, while the driver was swept away by the raging water and his body is yet to be recovered.

The county security team has since warned motorists and pedestrians not to attempt to cross a swollen river no matter how small it may appear.

Kizito said most points that look shallow and calm are the most dangerous points as they could be too deep.

He warned parents against sending their children to graze livestock in far areas away from their homes saying sometimes it rains heavily in the afternoon hours causing seasonal rivers to emerge, which are dangerous to cross.
